A Day-tripper's Guide to Duluth’s Iconic Neighborhood on the Lake
By: Justin Juntunen
Stop 1: Natural Beauty
Lake Superior / the Canal Park Boardwalk
It’s probably the reason you’ve arrived. Lake Superior. Holding ten percent of the world’s freshwater, it draws 6.7 million people to Duluth each year. If you arrive early, catch a sunrise over the lake, then take a walk/bike/run along the 7.5 mile Lakewalk trail from up the North Shore all the way down to the Aerial Lift Bridge.
Stop 2: History and Culture
The Aerial Lift Bridge
Constructed in 1905, The Aerial Lift Bridge is Duluth’s most iconic structure. It’s living history with everything from sail boats to thousand foot shipping vessels passing under it each week. The bridge connects Duluth’s Canal Park neighborhood to the sandy beaches of Park Point, the world’s largest inland sandbar. And you thought Duluth wasn’t a beach goers paradise.
Stop 3: Curated Shopping
Lake and Company + Flagship
Need to shop? Stop by our Lake and Company popup returning this June at The Hull, inside of Flagship. Flagship is Duluth’s premier local apparel company supporting local artists, quality products, all printed right in Duluth. They'll be hosting us again in June and we couldn’t be more excited. From curated gifts to essential up north apparel we’ve got you covered.
Stop 4: Local Eats
Northern Waters Smokehaus
You’re gonna need a bit to eat. And for that you are going to probably want the best locally smoked fish, meats, and sandwiches in town. Stop by Northern Waters Smokehaus. The list of sandwiches and options will be dizzying, but trust us you can’t go wrong. Grab that food to go and enjoy your sandwich while looking at the big lake they call “Gitchee Gummee.”
Stop 5: Nordic Spa Experience
Cedar & Stone Nordic Sauna
Need a bit of stress relief on this trip? Book a private sauna session with you and your people for some sanitized stress relief. The sauna’s proven wellness benefits and stress relief make for the perfect date day for those needing a getaway that will rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit. For over a century Duluth has been home to the Nordic cultural treasure of sauna! This place lives up to the reputation with its guided experiences, on-site massage, and panoramic windows to look out at Lake Superior during your session.
Stop 6: Crafted Cocktails
How about a Scandinavian inspired cocktail to finish it all off? These spirits are locally foraged and distilled with the freshest water right from Lake Superior. Their Winter Wunderbar is overflowing with hygge, coziness, and outdoor firepits. Or grab a cocktail kit to take your drinks home.
