America the Beautiful: Celebrating America's 250th

Celebrating America's 250th Through the Art of Terry Redlin

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we find ourselves reflecting on the landscapes, values, and traditions that have shaped our nation. There is perhaps no better visual tribute to that spirit than America the Beautiful, Terry Redlin's iconic series inspired by the beloved patriotic hymn.

Known as the land of opportunity, this series of eight paintings is Redlin's tribute to America's ideals and values. His passion for the nation is evident in every brushstroke—from pioneer families traveling west in search of a new beginning to peaceful lakes where children discover the simple joy of fishing. Each painting tells part of the American story through the eyes of everyday people.

O Beautiful for Spacious Skies

The journey begins with the pioneers who ventured west in covered wagons, leaving behind the familiarity of home in search of new opportunities. Redlin admired the courage of these families and sought to capture their spirit of adventure amid the grandeur of the western landscape. A lone eagle soaring overhead symbolizes the freedom and promise of a young nation.

For Amber Waves of Grain

After a long and difficult journey, the pioneers settled on the prairie. A home has been built, the well has been dug, and the first harvest is beginning to take shape. Inspired by the wild grasses near Redlin's childhood home in eastern South Dakota, this painting celebrates perseverance, hard work, and the hope of creating a brighter future.

For Purple Mountain Majesties

The opening of the West wasn't only about hard work—it was also about discovering the incredible beauty of America's landscapes. Beneath towering mountain peaks, children pause to admire wildflowers while elk emerge from the shelter of the hills. It's a reminder that adventure and wonder have always been part of the American experience.

Above the Fruited Plain

America's fertile farmland became a symbol of abundance. Redlin portrays a successful harvest with wagons overflowing with corn, apples, and milk while pigeons circle above a sturdy grain elevator. It's a tribute to the farmers whose dedication helped feed a growing nation.

America! America!

Few images are as iconic as the American flag flying above a one-room country schoolhouse. As the teacher reads a patriotic passage, one young boy's attention drifts toward a flock of ducks overhead—a detail Redlin affectionately described as a reflection of his own childhood. The painting captures both patriotism and the carefree curiosity of youth.

God Shed His Grace on Thee

For many early American communities, the church served as both a place of worship and the heart of social life. In this peaceful Sunday scene, horse-drawn buggies gather outside a brick church as warm sunlight breaks through the clouds, illuminating the congregation and symbolizing hope, faith, and community.

And Crown Thy Good with Brotherhood

As communities grew and electricity reached rural America, traditions evolved while neighbors remained closely connected. Set during the Christmas season, this painting celebrates generosity, togetherness, and the enduring values that continue to define small-town life.

From Sea to Shining Sea

The collection concludes with a quiet lakeside evening where a boy, a girl, and their dog enjoy time on the water near a lighthouse. Gulls swoop low in hopes of an easy catch while the children cast their lines into calm waters. It's a peaceful reminder that the American dream is often found in life's simplest moments—family, nature, and time spent together.

A Timeless Tribute

More than three decades after they were painted, Terry Redlin's America the Beautiful collection continues to resonate. Each work celebrates the places, people, and traditions that have shaped our country while reminding us that America's story is ultimately one of hope, perseverance, faith, and community.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, these paintings invite us to reflect on where we've been, appreciate where we are, and look ahead with gratitude for the generations who helped build the nation we call home.
